Initial Qualification and Training of Pilots of UAS

As part of Navigator CS, LLC’s establishment of its capability to obtain aerial imaging utilizing Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly known as “drones,” we worked with local pilot instructors to develop a training syllabus and a corresponding “Navigator CS, LLC’s Handbook for Pilots of Unmanned Aircraft Systems.” These assured that our licensed pilots have all necessary knowledge and training to safely and effectively carry out our projects. The Training Program for Pilots of UAS included instruction on the following areas:

  • Operation, inspection, maintenance and safety guidelines for the drones we fly
  • Scope and limitations of our FAA exemption and Certificate of Waiver or Authorization (COA), as well as the reasons for these limitations
  • Applicable 14 CFR references on our FAA exemption and COA
  • FAA Reporting requirements (NOTAM, Monthly Reports, Deviation Reports, Accident Reports)
  • Pre-flight activities required for safe and effective flights, including preparation of a flight plan, risk assessment, authorizations and release of liabilities from property owners and nonparticipating persons, filing NOTAM, and other
  • Flight tutorials and actual flying practice
  • Operation of the camera and downloading photos and videos – to verify completion of task prior to leaving the field
  • Preparation of project report
